Sudden Deafness Syndrome

I woke one morning with absolutely no hearing in my right ear. I could not hear my own voice. I had severe vertigo and extreme nausea that abated somewhat when I lay down but did not stop. My physician said it might be an inner ear infection and put me on antibiotics, which didn’t help the condition over the course of ten days. She referred me to an ENT.

After checking my ear, he told me he knew exactly what was causing my problem - the symptoms were consistent with a little-known condition that, if not treated, would probably be permanent. The only remedy was a course of oral steroid medication (prednisone), which restored hearing in most cases if administered soon after the onset of the symptoms. He had a partner who was an audiologist and she tested my hearing immediately and determined that I had no hearing in my right ear.

Although the ENT said that it might not help in my case after delaying treatment for so long, I started taking the prednisone and within the course of the medication was able to hear again in that ear. During my follow-up visit, I was again evaluated by the audiologist and found to have regained about 80% of the hearing in my right ear. Although I continue to experience occasional bouts of vertigo and still have 20% permanent hearing loss in my right ear, I guess I was lucky! I only recently heard this condition identified as Sudden Deafness Syndrome on one of the news programs on television (maybe Chronicle?), but I was surprised that I couldn’t find a reference to it on the internet. I would be interested in hearing from people who have suffered from this condition. I also recommend to anyone who experiences deafness in one ear that he or she see an ENT immediately!
