Vertigo just plain sucks
by: Patrick
on Mon, Oct 20 2008
I have lived in the city of Chicago my entire life minus the last two years as I now live in L.A. Growing up around the distinct 4 seasons I always did tend to feel a little sleepy in spring and absolutely lethargic in the fall. I figured it was hibernation season - after all, we are mammals as well.
About 4 years ago or so it happened, vertigo not a fun experience; came on like someone flicked a switch. Dizzy, pulled down and more to my left, cold sweat, anxiety panic attack. You name it, it happened. I was weak, fatigued and was scared @#$%less. I was also stressed, overworked, smoking, not exercising, not eating properly and only 25,26 at the time ( I’m now 30). Long story short, after a series of tests, MRI’s,etc - Vertigo.
My doctor pulled out all these old medical books and showed me how the inner ear works and what not and what can trigger it. Now being that I was a long time suffer of allergies and sinus;plus it got worse as I get older, my doc explained with the 4 seasons that when the barometric pressure drops(less moisture in the air, everything gets real stale and dry) thats when Vertigo can and will tend to strike.
He recommended some sitting and laying down exercises as well as taking a NON DROWSY anti-histamine when needed. Staying away from certain things( like the one lady said) dairy, wheat, certain sugars and of course booze and smoking will greatly bring it down. I myself as of right now have been suffering from it for the last two weeks or so. NOTE: It has been dry and hot here in LA with no rain in over six months and as soon as we got a little rain and the cool air blew in is when it started up for me. It was the first time I felt a fall here in L.A. like back home, hence my body adjusting over time to the climate. Hope my story helped and maybe gave a little clarity.

Melissa’s symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced as a child well into adulthood (now 60). From a sound sleep I would awaken with severe vertigo or dizziness accompanied by a very rapid heartbeat, which I believe was simply the fear accompanied with the vertigo symptoms.
