Help Melissa
by: Wade
on Tue, Oct 14 2008
Melissa’s symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced as a child well into adulthood (now 60). From a sound sleep I would awaken with severe vertigo or dizziness accompanied by a very rapid heartbeat, which I believe was simply the fear accompanied with the vertigo symptoms. It happened so fast and was so very dramatic that I remember at age 12 literally tearing the sheet on my bed as I tried to hold onto it because I felt like I was falling in a dizzy tumble. It only lasted a few seconds but seemed like forever. I have had episodes where I catapulted out of my bed to get on my hands and knees to try to find stability. I have also whacked my wife in the nose accidentally while trying to “right myself”.
At age 16 our family doctor diagnosed (read that as guessed)it as PAT, and really had no suggestions as to coping other than to wear a monitor so they could further diagnose it, which I did not do. At about age 40, after having very traumatic episodes two nights in a row, my wife suggested I try a Tylenol before I went to bed. May have been coincidental but I did not have another attack for some time. I learned to recognize that it seemed to happen more when I was very tired, so I began to take a Tylenol at night whenever I felt I was tired more than normal.
I have not had an episode in many, many years now. I may have grown out of it as my age progressed, but certainly a Tylenol would not hurt your daughter if she is feeling more tired than usual or overly stressed. I hope you have success with her problem, as I know how very terrifying it is. Please tell Melissa I am now an old guy and it did not hurt me…just scared me a lot. I would not have her take the Tylenol every night, just when she feels really tired.
