Living with vertigo for over 30 years

I believe that I have had vertigo all of my life, but it didn’t truly impact my life until 34 years ago. I had all of the classic symptoms - subjective dizziness nausea, lack of concentration, and was just plain sick. I spent two years in bed. I had surgery for it - two brain surgeries to eliminate constriction on my 8th crainial nerve. The second one on my right side left me more sick than I had ever been, if that was possible. I had a neurectomy of the 8th nerve on my right side. This left me with deafness in my right ear as well as loss of vestibular function on that side. My left side had been operated on and was damaged either as a result of the vertigo or the surgery.
I kept going - this is important. I kept thinking that I was ok. I wasn’t. It was’t until I finally found a doctor at Mass Eye and Ear who listened to me. I found others there who didn’t. He tested me and told me that he could not help me, but he could recommend a physical therapist at Mass General who had had good results with patients who had severe vestibular disorders. I worked with her and it changed my life. She worked with me to retrain my brain - neuro-muscular retraining. I am now a functioning human being at 66 years of age. I have had only one significant vertigo attack since I did physical therapy My life has changed. I am grateful and blessed. I guess I have to say that there is always help.

The other day I woke up and felt really dizzy. Like many of you know, it was not your normal dizzy. I have two kids that are 1 and 2 1/2. I am 32 years old. I only work 2 days a week and the day the spins hit me was the day I was suppose to work. I thought that I might have an easier time going to work than taking care of the kids. Big mistake…

On September 17th 2008 I was diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). The doctor from the emergency room gave me a medication that helps with the nausea and dizziness. It didn’t help much. And after a week I went back to emergency because I wasn’t feeling good at all and I didn’t know what is wrong with me.

My 13 yr old daughter started getting dizzy a little over 2 months ago. She didn’t say anything about it until the 25th of August, when she became so dizzy that she couldn’t go to school. She says that she has headache with the dizziness, that the room is spinning.

Hello to you all, My name is Maria I’m 44 yr old and It all started on Saturday night 9-13-08 with a severe migraine went home and went right to sleep. I woke up on Saturday morning July 12th, while I was flipping on one side of my bed to the other, and went into a dizzy frenzy. It wasn’t a normal dizzy..everything was spinning around me, and my eyes were moving trying to catch up.

Like many of you I too have terrible vertigo and ringing in my ears. It is constant, I am so upset because I am getting additional headaches due to the ringing, its so loud that I can’t sleep and now I can’t concentrate during the day.

My husband woke up Sunday morning with more than his usual grogginess, but wrote it off and had breakfast and went to church anyway. As the morning progressed, he felt worse and worse, and after church, was so dizzy and nauseated that he had me drive, and he was in agony on the ride home (and threw up in the garage as soon as we stopped).
