5 1/2 years and counting!

In Dec 2002 I suffered a severe vertigo attack that I have never recovered from, I was 31 when it happened. Initially I could not walk as it felt I had a brick in one ear pulling me to the floor, vomiting etc, just terrible as you all know. No medication helps except for Stemitil for nausea.
I would highly recomment that any person with vertigo get testing done to pinpoint the cause. While it is not known why it happens to me, it was discovered that my eyes ‘bounce’ up and down when I move around, this is called having a downbeat nystigma.
I have found that I have learnt how to move around with out upsetting my condition, needless to say I have not been able to lie flat on the floor, run or do anything that moves my head around too much. I sleep with alot of pillows, so I sleep ‘up’ in bed.
My condition is unreliable and while I might need to ‘rest’ often, I don’t suffer from the ‘being pulled into the abyss’ feeling to often thank God!
Stress doesn’t help and I certainly don’t have the stamina to work full-time! However I have changed my diet recently to low-carb, high protien and have felt some improvements in my overall health. I’m also having fun with the Nintento Wii Fit as it has exercises I can do without me having to move my head around too fast!
Whilst I was at home also in the beginning stages spending alot of time in bed I started to study an off-campus university degree when I felt more able to read and get up more. Good news is that I was able to attend uni for the last year of the degree (part-time) and graduated in May this year.
I did end up applying for a Disability Support Pension (Australia)as working full-time is out. I have been granted this and this helps towards the family income. I continue to try and engage myself with activites (doing a drawing class at present). I am also looking for an employer who can take me on for a few hours per week. I also spend time trying to think of any home businesses I could develop!
So my ethos is that I try and keep living and moving and just have to work around feeling sick for a few days.
Good luck to you all battling with the condition
