My Vertigo
by: Carol on Mon, May 19 2008

I am experiencing vertigo in the mornings when I arise, and also when I go to bed and lie down, and then when I roll over in bed.
My first bout with it occured in 1996, and only in one ear. I didn’t know what it was and went to the doctor who prescribed Antivert. I took it and was out of work for three days till the vertigo subsided. My next bout was in November of 1997 when I got it very badly and in both ears. I will remember that time as if it was yesterday. I couldn’t get to sleep and when I looked at the clock, turning my head to the right, all I remember was the room spinning. I had to lie verys till staring at the ceiling all night. I remember calling my boss at 6:30 in the morning, telling her I couldn’t come to work because of it and how bad it was. I waited another two hours before I called my doctor who thankfully prescribed the Antivert again. I had to wait for my ex husband to go to the pharmacy to get it. By that time, I was a basket case. I couldn’t sleep (which i was dieing to do), but every time I closed my eyes, the room would start to spin. There I lied in bed staring at the ceiling. I do remember going to the bathroom, walking very slowly, staring straight ahead, and holding onto the wall. It was the only way I could function without getting sick or falling. Once I took the Antivert, within 10 minutes I fell asleep and must have slept about 5 hours before I woke up again. Eventually I was out of work for the whole month of November. I did go see my doctor who referred me to a doctor who specialized in inner ear problems. I had some tests to determine if I had Menier’s disease and that consisted of turning my head to one side while the doctor poured water in my ear and made me do some multiplication tables. I know it sounds bizarre, but it determined alot of things and eliminated some other things that could cause the vertigo After I was healed, I hadn’t had another bout with it till 2005, and that lasted two days. That one made me sick to my stomach, but went away on it’s own without medication. I now have it and am glad it is only a minor bout, but still it is not pleasant. I am hoping that it goes away on it’s own this time also.
