1st vertigo attack
by: Ron M. on Fri, Apr 04 2008
Facebook Twitter

I had my first vertigo attack at aprrox. 130 this morning. I was in bed watching tv and turned from my right side onto my back. As i moved, it felt like someone added a 30 lb weight to my head and i got very dizzy. I was scared. I sat up and the dizziness and the feeling of a “heaviness” to my head increased. My hands and feet started going numb and i could feel my heart pounding. I tried getting to my feet. I found my balance was completely shot and the dizziness and ” heaviness” increased. I thought that i was possibly having a stroke I was terrified. I was trying to find a phone and get dressed. i needed to get to the ER. I felt completely uncoordinated. I had to sit down and scoot down the stairs.

i am 37.i work out 5 times a week. i watch my diet. i am in great health. what was happening to me? all i knew at the time was that something wasn’t right and i felt that the dizziness heaviness, uncoordination, and now nausea were intensifying. a wonderful friend took me to the ER. My BP was 156/100, HR 100’s. I couldn’t even name the President or the year. Only after hints from my friend and much concentration on my part could i answer. An iv was started, labs drawn, ekg done, and CT of the head.all turned up negative.I was given iv Zofran(for nausea) and Valium(the doctor says it helps calm the inner ear and my shot nerves..lol). the doctor told me he suspected Vertigo. i had heard of vertigo but i never realized it could take a hold of your life and turn things(literally) topsy-turvy in such a dramatic manner.

After a few hours, i felt a little better and was released. I am still feeling dizzy, esp when i lay my head backwards. i still feel a ” heaviness” to my body and head when i move. i feel a little more coordinated than ealier, but walking any distance or driving can not be attempted….working today is out of the question. After calling into work today to let them know the events of this morning, i felt that they didn’t underdstand. “he’s just dizzy” was the attitude i perceived. After reading other’s stories and about the symptoms of Vertigo, i’m not sure how i can function if these symptoms persists for days, weeks,or months at a time. that really scares me. I have an appointment with an ENT next week to further diagnose my symptoms. I have an aunt and a cousin that suffer from vertigo. i never knew this until today.

is vertigo hereditary? I was given a prescription for a nausea medication and an anti-anxiety medication. i suppose the ENT will do an MRI and give prescriptions as necessary. Thank you to all who have shared their stories. It really has helped me feel less alone and less scared after the events of this morning.
