Healthy 29-year-old with Vertigo?
by: Sarah
on Wed, Dec 05 2007
This started 8 days ago, I was sitting on the couch drinking a banana milk shake and got such a strong feeling that I was going to pass out that I had to set the shake down and sit absolutely still for a minute or so. It passed.
I have always had low blood pressure, so I thought that was it - triggered by the high potassium content of the 5 bananas in the shake. I felt better, and went to my meditation group. Off and on throughout that 2-hour meeting I would feel like I was going to pass out. I took of layers of clothes and that helped somewhat. Again, I thought it was a drop in blood pressure or overheating.
I have passed out, or come close to it, several times throughout my life when I would overheat (due to exercise or being in very hot weather). The feeling felt similar to that, but with no causes leading up to it. It seemed to just hit me all of a sudden, off and on. This lasted another 2 days, but lessened. Then I got back to normal and had no sympoms for about 5 days in a row.
Then all of a sudden again, felt the rush that I was going to pass out. This time I was sitting in class - so it was not because I was overheating and I had been watching what I eat since the last episodes, thinking it was a blood pressure issue that I could control with my food and staying hydrated. Still, I got the same feeling of passing out, with no reason why. Sometimes I would feel perfectly fine, good enough to keep up with my regular 3-day-a-week workout routine (I’m a runner and am presently running 3 miles at a time).
Then last night it came on so bad that it really scared me, since I really had no reason for it to happen. I was awoken from sleep and felt like the room was spinning and I was going to pass out. Since I live alone this really scared me, so I went to the emergency room. The blood tests came back normal, as did the chest X-rays. I have not had tests or scans on my brain/head yet, but go back to the doctor in 2 days.
Today I have the feeling of passing out/spinning off and on. I am looking forward to the doctor’s visit in 2 days and hope it is helpful. This is all just very frustrating and scary because up until now I have been a pretty healthy, young woman who values eating well and exercising.
