I’m Curious and what is the cause?
by: CJ
on Wed, Oct 03 2007
I find the experience of others very familiar and am somewhat shocked by how many others are experiencing vertigo and how common it is. But I have to wonder if all vertigo is the same, as mine starts with a definite sensation stemming from the stem/base of my neck.
My first bout of vertigo was probably 1-2 minutes of spinning while I meditated laying down in September of 1996. At first I attempted to ride it out only to find myself stumbling to the bathroom looking for what-Advil? It stopped enroute to the bathroom.
My second bout was in October the same year which lasted a full week. I woke, rolled over in bed and felt as though I were still rolling-1 day of spinning followed by 4 days of my equalibirium slowly returning.
I didn’t have another bout until May of 2000. Since then I have found the bouts more frequent but sporadic and without any idea as to the trigger. At first I thought it was stress or lack of sleep maybe even something I was eating but the most recent bouts have nixed that notion. I have had MRI and CAT scans as well as blood work done with only the discovery of ostheoarthritis in the neck. (Hmmm, now when did that start? Could it have been 1996?) I’ve had tinnitus for many years (repeated exposure to loud music will do that), long before my first bout of Vertigo I’ve tried chiropractic as well as massage and am thinking of pursing acupuncture treatments as I’ve had success with acupuncture for other ailments. Interestingly, 3 of my 4 sisters have experienced vertigo as they reach their 40’s (I’m 51). My mother has had Meniere’s Disease since she was a teenager. Hmmm, is Vertigo hereditary? I started taking Meclazine (as needed) last year after the 2nd worse bout I’d experienced (2nd to October of 1996) where the spinning didn’t subside for over 6 hours. I’m curious to know -
1-If anyone has tried alternative medicines and if there has been any noticable improvements?
2-If other members in your family have experienced vertigo?
3-Where does the sensation begin?
4-Are you aware of any triggers?
5-Are any of the entries from men? Do men experience vertigo?

- Life on the High Seas - by Tricia - (Mon, Oct 29 2007)
I’m a 43 year old female, and this is the 3rd episode of vertigo I’ve had in 3 years. Never had it before age 41. Reading about the experience of others here is helpful because it helps comfort me. Makes me feel a little more normal. So much of what people have written sounds identical to my experience. That helps. For me, it seems to be worse each time which terrifies me.

- Meniers & Virtigo [Vertigo] - by thefencegirl - (Sun, Oct 28 2007)
When I was 24 I had my first virtigo [vertigo] attack, mild vomiting spinning etc. I went thru a series of tests with the ENT: ear irrigation, CAT scans, but they showed nothing. They concluded that I had Meniers disorder [Meniere’s disease], prescribed an antivert or mecklizine [meclizine]. (By the way, I have since found that you can usually ask your pharmisist [pharmacist] for these meds over the counter.) These attacks eventually went away until I was in my thirties, when they came back worse than ever.

Well I had my first experience with vertigo today. Actually still in the bed. I had to get online and see what I could find out.
My symptoms with ringing in my ears then louder in my right ear. I got up from what I was doing, sat down and evaluated myself, that I didn’t feel right and realized I was getting dizzier by the second.

- Upbeat nystagmus - by John M - (Sun, Oct 28 2007)
I’m told that I’ve been diagnosed with an upbeat nystagmus. My real problem is nausea with any type of head movement whether it’s looking up, down or twisting my head side to side, which caused severe acid reflex associated with the head movement. In addition to this my upbeat nystagmus affects my reading, balance and face recognition as I pass people by. Overall, this has severely limited my activities which is the opposite of what I used to do, such as regular exercise and play sports.

- living with migraine - by Michelle - (Mon, Oct 22 2007)
I am 39 years of age, and whilst I had suffered migraine in my early 20’s, I had not experienced any episodes for a vast number of years. My migraines now are quite different to those I had years ago, and in fact are only one part of the problem. This new wave of migraines have created a permanent problem with vertigo, which is probably more frustrating than the headaches. I had a number of scans, both CT and MRI and Migraine Associated with Vertigo (MAV) is the diagnosis.

- Violent attack - by J.D. - (Fri, Oct 19 2007)
I am so glad I looked and found this site. I feel so bad for all who suffer from Vertigo. Had the worst attack last Sat. Mine comes on when I lie flat or try to lay on rt. side. At hairdresser’s and was getting my hair washed, she lifted my head up just a little and “BANG”. The room tilted so violently, I asked her, “am I moving”, she said “No”. I immediately turned my head left and grabbed onto the chair next to me. After several min. it subsided, a little. When I got up to walk, I could only take a few steps and had to sit down…….dizzy head.

I am 48, too heavy, but otherwise in good health; sugar, cholesterol, BP, all good. In May I experienced a few episodes of dizziness that would only last for a few seconds, then nothing for about a month. Toward the end of June they came back, but it was something I could feel coming on and could pull over if I was driving until the symptoms passed.

- DO NOT ignore any signs of dizziness - by Irma G - (Thu, Oct 11 2007)
I had the worse Vertigo episode ever this last weekend. It kept me in the hospital for 3 days. I thought at first I was coming down with the flu. I felt dizzy and sweaty, with cold chills at the same time. When my jaw started to lock I immediatley began to vomit. I felt as though my stomach was coming up. My blood pressure was 205 over 97 and my heart was beating at twice it’s normal pace. When I arrived by ambulance to the hospital they thought I was going into cardiac arrest.

Hi, I used to have vertigo but after 3 years it went away but now I have constant pressure in my head and ears and it makes me feel tired. When my episodes of vertigo hit it was always when I was laying down. It never mattered what side I was on but as soon as I moved it would stop.

- Non-Prescription meds for Vertigo - by Lisa - (Wed, Oct 03 2007)
I wrote the other day on this blog, and I would not wish this condition on anyone. Reading the other blogs here helps me to realize that I am not alone in this, nor have I imagined my symptoms. I’ve had people tell me it’s my imagination or nerves, which frustrated me even more.
