- Vertigo for 18 Years - by Mary - (Thu, Aug 30 2007)
I had my first vertigo incident when I was 21 years old. I had an ear infection in my right ear that was so bad that it affected my inner ear. I did not get to “normal” until six months later. Now, 18 years later, I still have problems.
I have been to numerous ENTs trying to find answers and they all kept telling me that I have Meinere’s [Meniere’s] disease - I did not believe this because I have never lost my hearing. My problem was episodes of vertigo and that I could not lay in bed on my right side (the side I had my infection in) because I always get vertigo Finally I found an ENT who directed me to a Balance Disorder Specialist. Apparently, this is a subspecialty and there are not many around. Luckily, there was on in my home state.

I’ve had vertigo three times and after going through the “PPO” nightmares of MRI’s etc. Go to a ENT and have them do a maneuver (can’t remember the name) but they basically lie you to your side and switch to the other side to where the crystals are placed back correctly.

How are you supposed to work with this? I’ve had vertigo for years but mine can last up to a week. Know how frustrating it is to try to explain to everyone why just turning your head can make you sick? I’ve had ear problems my entire life (I’m 36) but this takes the cake. Numbness in my mouth and fingers, dizziness and tingling.
