I am a survivor of diffused axonal injury

On november 6th, 2008, I was involved in a terrible car accident that lead me to the diagnosis of diffused axonal syndrome. I was in an induced coma for almost 4 weeks, then a self induced coma for nearly two weeks. During both of these cycles, I was not aware of the diagnosis or what it meant as far as my welfare and future; however, after reading and talking to doctors and staff that were with me, I have come to understand the seriousness and finality that this condition can mean.

Luckily today, January 30th, I am walking, talking, taking care of myself, and ready to go back to work. I was rehabilitated and not allowed to eat or drink for a period of time, but fought constantly to regain my normalcy. I, at times, as anyone would experiencing this, wondered what was going to happen and if I would be 100% again, but I never gave up. You cannot always believe what the doctors tell you because they are only giving knowledge from books or past experience. The real strength comes from inside and the determination you must keep in order to win. I thank God everyday for my life and realize that the odds were placed against me.

If you or your loved ones has faced or is facing this condition now, just pray and believe. It can and will get better.
