RSD
by: Patricia
on Mon, Aug 24 2009
I have been living with RSD since a right knee operation in 2005. I had two cortisone injections into the knee but the pain did not go away and I was still unable to unaided. In April 2006 referred me to a pain specialist. When in went to see the specialist he firmly believed in nerve blocks because of my age which was 50 and was the quicker alternative than medication. The specialist performed a nerve block in June 2005 and for 5 days I was completely without pain, but unfortunately it came back. I went back to the specialist and he performed another nerve block but on a different nerve. This nerve block did nothing but the specialist still believed that the final one would.
I went for the 3 nerve block in the October this caused me to be incontinent for 2 weeks. Can remember going to the doctors and passing water in the car park I wanted the ground open up and swallow me up. Not only did it cause incontinence but the pain in the knee was much worst. The pain start on the inside of my right knee and went upto the groin area and then into the middle of my back. The knee was very red and swollen and it became hot and cold and pain was terrible.
My GP referred me to another specialist in pain management department who put me on a cocktail of drugs Pregabalin 300mg x 2 daily Amitriptyline 100mg nightly and Co-codamol 30mg/500mg 2 x 4 daily. This took me an age to take the medication because of all the side effects. But the specialist reassured me that he would give me my life back but work was a different thing. I have eventually been able to take the medication and have a life. If I over do things I can soon revert back to being in unbearable pain and feel like I have flu. The pain is always in the back ground but I can now walk but do fall due to the muscle wastage on the upper right leg I also walk with a stick.
I am now going to a physio to try and regain some of the muscle. I am happier person and living with the condition in the back ground. I have now been given ill health retirement at the being of this year which was another big battle. I want to say to all suffers out their don’t give up hope.

It is not my back nor is it my hip. 3 injections for my back, injection in my hip, nerve block, spinal stimulator and physical therapy have not helped at all.
