Nurse caused my RSD
by: E K on Wed, Aug 12 2009
Facebook Twitter

In February 2009 I got a bad case of food poisoning. After four long days of being sick I finally gave in and went to the hospital. While there I had one nurse try 5 times to start an IV unsuccessfully. Then a new nurse came in to try and start the IV. The instant she inserted the needle I felt intense pain and it felt like liquid fire in my hand. I screamed and told the nurse of the pain, her response was to move the needle from sided to side while rudely telling me “I’m not doing anything.” She then pulled the needle out but the fire in my hand remained. At this point the Dr. came in and gave both nurses hell for having tried so many times. The Dr. then put an emela patch on my hand and then he came back 20min later and got the IV started in one try. They’re multiple IV attempts left me bruised up both arms to the elbow.

One week later once the bruising had finally gone down, but the pain in my hand had not left. I went to my Dr. because of the sensitivity all around the area of the attempted IV site.

My Dr. had an immediate suspicion that I had RSD So he started me on Lyrica, and percocet. The pain continued to escalate day by day, and it began to move up my arm, and at times it would affect the whole right side of my body.

As I worked with my Dr. we increased my dosage of Lyrica (up to the max dosage) he added in Gabapentin (now up to max dosage). Then he got me into a pain clinic where they performed two nerve blocks with no success. I also had developed a tremor in my right hand, that continued to worsen until we got me up to the max dosages of my meds, and then finally the twitching stopped being a constant occurrence.

I’ve started to get sick from some of the side effects from all of the drugs. So now I’m on stomach medications, as well as three other pain killers.

I’m now in a second pain clinic where they are trying Lydocane injections to see if that will help. To date this treatment has not helped.

I now find myself in constant pain, I am having to take almost 40 pills a day. I am no longer able to work as a right handed bookkeeper. I feel like such a burden to my husband.

To think this all started because I went to a hospital to get help!
