Ignorance is not Bliss
by: M. O'D

I was involved in a car accident in which a small bone in my hand was broken. Surgery could not be done for 10 days, so my hand was put in a half plaster cast and repaired with the insertion of a screw and pin. Within a couple of days my hand began to burn and drive me mad under the cast. Following its removal, the doctor did not even examine my hand. He told me I needn’t return to see him unless I had a problem. I thought the pain I was experiencing must have been normal after such an operation. However, after a couple of weeks I began to worry as the side of my hand was so sensitive and painful to the touch, and the burning, stabbing pain in the knuckle of the little finger and the area of the operation continued.
I visited the surgery twice, saying I was worried about it. I was first told to have physio, then to have it x-rayed. The surgeon still didn’t even look at it. By this time it was looking inflamed and the skin was changing. When the x-ray revealed the bone had healed, the surgeon dismissed me, still without looking at the hand! My physio observed that hair was growing out the side of my hand, indicating trauma or nerve damage. My nails which I had never been able to grow, were suddenly quite long! I was unable to do most of the physio given me because my hand went out of shape and the pain was great when I tried to do so. After requesting a referral from my GP, I saw another hand and foot surgeon who immediately on taking my hand and looking at it, inquired whether I had heard of RSD to which I responded in the negative. He didn’t enlighten me, but we agreed he would remove the hardware in my hand at the earliest possible time. This happened 3 1/2 months after the initial surgery.
Following surgery, he advised me that the screw had been inserted through a tendon, and the pin right through the bone to the outside of my hand and was rubbing on the nerve which runs along the side of the hand. The nerve was ragged. As a result the knuckle of this little finger had been burning with pain and was now stiff and numb. He couldn’t say whether the RSD would be cured, but the burning pain ceased almost at once, the skin has returned to an almost normal colour. However, 13 months after the second operation, and many months of trying to stretch and exercise the finger, I have only partial feeling in the finger and exercise seems to aggravate it and cause it to contract.
I don’t think it will ever recover, but hopefully the threat of osteoporosis has been checked. If I hadn’t taken matters into my own hands and asked for a referral to another surgeon I would be suffering with incurable osteoporosis and acute pain.

I’m glad I found other people that feel the same way that I do. I had an injury to my knee on 8/28/08 and had surgery finally on 2/23/09. I went to have my stitches taken out and oh wow I thought I was going to die. After the stiches were removed the barely touched my knee and the pain sent me right threw the roof.
