CRPS in and out of remission

Hi my name is Carolyn and I am 45 years old. My story actually begins back in 2004. I work as a youth crisis counsellor in a high risk security unit of a psychiatric hospital. I was attacked and assaulted by a patient there which resulted in injuries to the entire left side of my body. Nothing was broken just badly bruised and traumatized. I was off work for roughly 3 weeks after this at which time I felt able to return to work. 6 months later the pain starts. It intensifies to include my entire left side but the inflamation was primarily the left arm, shoulder and neck. It had all the same symptoms as CRPS/RSD. THe feeling as if I had a sunburn, jolts of what felt like electricity, constant muscle aches, sensitivity to touch, temp noise. Pain that actually moved my limbs for me, kind of like spasms.

The doctors did all sorts of tests but nobody thought of CRPS at that time. After 7 months the symptoms had dissapeared and I resumed my life never having known what had just happened to me. 4 years later 2008, my right knee becomes swollen and painful out of the blue. No injury this time. The leg changes colour to a dusky purply and remains swollen and painful everyday and night. The pain intensifies and I become physically limited. The doctor does bloodwork and identifies that I am positive for two antibodies ANA and ENA which may indicate an autoimmune or connective tissue disease. Months later, still in pain and 3 doctors later I go to see a sceroderma specialist and he examines me. He studies all my test results and diagnoses me with CRPS. My symptoms of my right leg, hip and foot start to mirror image on the left leg. The intense burning pain is beginning to abate but I can feel all the other symptoms lurking there. I can no longer bend three of the toes on my right foot and constantly feel tingling, hot and cold and pain in my feet.

I wonder if anyone else has gone into remission spontaneously without medication. I am allergic to a lot of pain meds so I do not take any. Although, some days I wish I did. I have not been back to work for the past five months and am not sure what to expect yet. This is all so new but now that I have a diagnosis everything from all thoses years fits right in. I would really appreciate anyone’s thoughts on remission and possibilities for the future. Thanks, Carolyn
