12 years of living with awful pain - RSD
by: Sandi S.
on Wed, Mar 04 2009
It was a normal day like any other day. I was canning tomatoes and ran out of lids and got in the car to go to the grocery store just 5 blocks away and while sitting at the stop light with the grocery store the very next turn I was hit in the back - hard - by a drunk driver. Five operations later and a year and 1/2 later I find out I have RSD because of the injury to spinal column.
It has effected my entire life. I was wheelchair bound the first 3 years only and then slowly have gotten to where my Doctor has found the right medications to make it so I can at least walk on crutches for awhile and stand to be on my legs. I have RSD in both feet, both legs, up my back and in my neck. I could not have even imagined living with this kind of pain before having RSD but somehow you get the strength to go on and make it just one more painful day. I now am use to being awake every 2 hours all night long from the pain and having to hardly go anywhere - especially in the winter. What I can not get use to is how people react to me because I have RSD
My husband left me the first year because he said he did not sign up to live with a handicap. My friends have dwindled away because I can not do very much. I can not work anymore and I loved my job. I miss half of the family gatherings and barely could go to my mothers funeral. I get shingles now and my immune system is shot and get about everything that I get in contact with. Going to the grocery store alone is horrible and a very painful job. Then I have the groceries to carry in the house alone. Life is so hard with RSD and people do not realize what a lonely disease this is.
More than the pain the loneliness is horrible. People feel helpless and it get’s hard for them to see you in pain - they say. It is hard to be in this kind of pain - but loneliness and the pain together is awful. I can not sit at church as long as most services go and I miss that. I am hoping by writing this I can meet others with RSD and start to visit with them. I understand what you are going through and you do me. It is a hard life but I must get through each day and want to - I just want to be able to talk and visit with people still. I do not want to be alone so much in the pain. Is there anyone out there that feels like I do? My heart goes out to all that have RSD because it is a horrible disease to live with. I hope for all of you a pain free day and happiness in the future.
