To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download RSD In DECEMBER 2007 I hurt my ankle and immediately went to the emergency room because I couldn’t walk-my foot had instantly swelled and I had a severe “pins and needles” feeling. My foot immediately swelled to twice it’s orig. size. I was told in the emergency room that I broke my foot and given pain medication (I tried to explain that I wasn’t in pain and that it was more of a numb feeling.) The ER doctor splinted my foot and told me to have it casted by an ortho. I started noticing that my foot was extremely cold and a purple color - since I have never broken a bone I assumed this was normal. A week later the ortho explained that it was actually a sprain and that I had CPRS and should immediately seek physical therapy I started that day. The therapist wasn’t familiar with the condition and instructed me to ice my foot. I started noticing that it felt better and the pins and needles feeling eased slightly when I soaked it in a hot bath or wrapped it in heat. The PT helped to desensitize the area and within a month of doing my PT at home, work and even in the shower - I was walking again. As for pain, besides the numbing “pins and needle” feeling the first month, I’ve felt only slight pain in my foot. I had experienced slight burning sensations in my leg dring weeks 3-5. While in PT I started to have nerve pain in my arms and back. My back became very sensitive to touch. I enlisted the help of an OT and within 3 weeks of weight training and desensitization- the pain disappeared. I had other symptoms that I couldn’t explain such as jaw pain and increased pulse (which could have been related to the fact that I went into panic mode after reading up on the diagnosis). I have been back to the gym for 5 months and only occasionally feel any discomfort. I’m not sure if this remission will last because every website seems to have a different theory. I was so dismayed by the treatment I received from the medical profession in general. I was shocked by the the assumptions made by medical professionals and by the way I was treated - that needs to change. Comments
