I am a 54 year old female, investigation for RSD started in 2001 and some years later got the diagnosis. There is hope, together, sharing our stories, we can also share our strength hope & courage. I would like to start a support group in South Africa. The RSD support group is extremely helpful and also meeting wonderful people who become our family and friends. I have RSD in my left foot as a result of an injury, I am now in the 3rd stage, some Drs say there is the 4th stage as well. I have now got RSD in foot and upper leg and into the groin and am managing well, after acceptance that the person I was and the person who I am today, is a big difference, I have dealt with the issues that I had to deal with, emotionally, financially medication is expensive in South Africa, for me I highly recommend the genuine Chrocs shoes if you can afford them otherwise the normal ones you get in the supermakets.

My left leg is heavy, feels like I’m carrying my leg with me, my foot at times feels like an ice bag inside the actual foot, I chose my own socks as I cannot wear certain sock material, also I have been told to wear diabetic socks and they have helped tremendously! I wear the old socks and then put on the diabetic socks, and it does make a big difference and does help with the frozen foot, as I call it. I also have help daily as I cannot do certain things, but, I do have my own hobbies, beading, gardening, not a lot of gardening otherwise I will suffer afterwards. I have learnt not to do everything in one day, and so if I do one thing a day that I have accepted completely. For me I’m fortunate to have the help I get everyday except for week ends, and having hobbies is so important! Keeping my mind occupied and focused on other things keep my RSD bearable. Not everyday is fine, its okay for me to lie down, take medication, I know for sure that there isnt “a pill” for RSD so it is a matter of trial and error.

It is very important to have the support of family & friends, if you dont, the RSD support group will become your family and friends! I am truly blessed, for me thats extremely important, I think of those with full body RSD, wow, I thank God I have only got RSD in the left foot and leg! I am positive most days, I have a good relationship with my Dr and have learnt so much about myself and how to cope each day, one step at a time.
