In September of 1970 I returned to eastern TN from two years service in the US Navy’s Brown water fleet. The rockets, rpg’s, mines and assorted small arms fire were clear signals attesting to fact that our LST (tank landing ship) was not acceptable to our welcoming committee.
The insidious enemy, however, was to be found lurking in the lush vegetation. The thick tropical jungle was dangerous in many ways but it would not reach its full potential until it’s foliage met its nemesis, Agent Orange.
No, Agent Orange was not some espionage operative. rather, it was a defoliant spread in crop duster fashion, on the verdant landscape. True, it denuded the the trees and in so doing left less areas for cover for the Viet Cong.
In the process of killing Mosquito’s with napalm, the collateral damage began to rise round about in a mound. The enemy, friends, allies and even our own troops.
Those of us who plied the rivers, canals and interconnecting waterways, not only received the over spray, we were privileged to drink the stuff.
Needless to say, when Neurologists say the peripheral neuropathy that has plagued me for these 37+ years is idiopathic. I have to smile… through the pain.
At 58 yrs I can no longer work and the medicine that kept my pain under control is gone. Tomorrow, Lord willing I will face the VA and see what they have to say.
Wish me luck
