Bacterial Meningitis at 15

by: Megan on Fri, Sep 14 2007

Right now I’m researching bacterial meningitis for my senior project. I never thought I’d have it. 15 is a scary age to lose your life. I had sever headaches, really bad neck pain. Everything hurt. All I felt was pain. I went to school and would get sent home for having high fevers around 102. At first when I told my parents about how sick I felt, they just thought maybe I was trying to get out of school. Maybe, I just had a cold or something. But, I got so much worse and time went on. I was throwing up everything and never felt so much pain in my life. No one ever heard of meningitis. I remember one day my Dad had taken me to the hospital, I remember walking up to the receptionist and throwing up.. Everything went blank. Apperently I was wearing hunting clothes that day, I didn’t shower. I just wasn’t me. I don’t remember a whole lot of anything. It was April Fools Day. It was all so weird. And, I think it’s strange that, well, you would think that since I had it, I would know alot. But, I don’t! My thoughts of that time.. I just don’t know anything.. My family.. I can’t explain how they felt. They never thought I was in danger of loosing my life. I have an incision in the back of my head and above my left eye. Scary, yes.. I.. really can’t write alot. If I think hard enough I’d remember some of the things that went on.. I was in the hospital for about 15 days.. My Mom was dealing with her college at the time.. my disease just stopped everything. I remember more of when I was getting better. I had double vision for a very long time after I got out of the hospital. It hurt so badly that I couldn’t read my get-well-cards, I had trouble walking and dealing with lights. I don’t have alot of time to write much more.. I’m in school = ) But with this almost fatal memory, I’ve learned to value life.

Do you have epilepsy caused by Menacocis (bacterial Meningitis)? I had it as an infant, and now suffer from partial seizures This side affect has been with me all my life (epilepsy) and even though I have tried several medications and currently take both Keppra and Neurontin (at low and high dosages to test them), [more..]
  • Long term effects of Meningitis - by Oranah - (Fri, Sep 14 2007)
Thanks Jean for your submission. I can appreciate you inability to find information on the long term response to meningitis. From my own experience with bacterial meningitis, while I did recover very well, I do note certain “changes.” [more..]
