Living with Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Hello- I had the flu and went home sick from work for the first time in a year! Then after a couple days of feeling better I was really weak… could barely walk, hold a butter knife etc. and it got worse over 2 days. I went to the Emergency room and was there for 8 hours, they tested my blood and sent me home said 24-48 hours I would feel better- and the next morning I couldn’t even get out of bed, so called 911 and when I arrived at the hospital they knew what it was and I was admitted right away and started on IVIG. After 2 days I could already move my fingers again- I was so relieved.

Each day I saw improvements, and the physio was very helpful and SO important! You just have to keep trying! I was really happy with my recovery and I was out of the hospital in just 3 weeks- and I have almost made a full recovery (I was admitted April 7 2008). I have been back at work for 3 weeks and I am back in my classes at the gym.

The most important thing is to stay positive through the whole thing. There were days when I just wanted to stay in bed and feel sorry for myself then go to physio, but now I see how much it helped and just to keep a positive spirit.
