My father began to feel funny , not able to walk, headache and tingling. 2 days before the ship was to dock, and went to the infirmary on the ship. They did not know what it was, but did not think it was life threatening, so they had an ambulance meet my parents at the dock and transport him to the local hospital. At this point, he could no longer walk at all, and was having to be carried everywhere in a wheelchair. They never thought to medivac him off the ship when it first started. He was admitted immediately into the hospital, and by the end of the day had been diagnosed with GBS. We live 450 miles away, so we have had to set up housekeeping here because he cannot be transported at this time. They tell us he will be in ICU for at least the next 3 weeks, they had to intebate him today because of congestion in his lungs (they are trying to avoid pneumonia). They have also put him in a medically induced comma because of the tube in his throat, and said this will last about 10 days. He is going through the plasma treatments every day, (he has had 4 so far). He is currently in critical condition in ICU. Please tell me that this is all part of the course of this illness. Has anyone else’s GBS been this bad? At present, his legs are totally paralyzed up to his diagraphm area and he can move his hands, but has no coordination in them. Comments
