Recovered

For the onset was slow. At first I thought my trouble getting out of bed was simply due to being tired. But over the course of several days, I went from “dragging myself out of bed” in the morning to being unable to roll over.

Eventually, one morning Mom found me still in bed, well after waking me up, and I got the stern warning, “Get up. You are going to miss the bus.” I replied, “I can’t.” It took a little convincing that I wasn’t fooling as I had said nothing about the weakness in the days prior and let’s face it. You just don’t expect for your kid to wake up paralyzed.

She quickly dressed me and took me to the doctor. I am sure there were many concerned conversations, but I never saw fear or panic. Consequently, I never felt fear or panic. It was just weird, nothing more. No one hid the dangerous possibilities if it continued to worsen, but there was a tacet confidence that everything would return to normal.

Fortunately my breathing and swallowing were never affected. I spent several more days in that condition, then slowly regained use of my lower body. I returned to school on crutches, but soon was back running around with my friends.

That was nearly thirty years ago. In that time I have hiked many mountains, biked many miles, played tennis for hours at the time. To this day I run regularly and have no trouble passing my military physical fitness tests.

I won’t say there are no lingering effects. I don’t feel as strong or have quite the zip I did before, but maybe my daughter is right. Maybe I am just getting “old”.

My symptoms started with tingling in my feet. I thought it was because I was on my feet for 10-12 hours a day. I was a restaurant manager, so of course I was tired. Then it moved to my fingers, and I still didn’t think anything because it would dissipate throughout the day. [more..]
