Guillain-Barre Stole my Summer

It was the worst experiance of my life. It was the summer going into fourth grade, and I was involved in a day camp.
And in the begining of the week, when we sat on the floor I realized I couldn’t get myself up! Then Wednesday I woke up and noticed that my feet and legs were tingly like pins and needles but ten times worse. So my mom brought me to the doctors. From there I was told I had to go to Worcestor Medical Center. I was so scared! I knew then that this was really serious.
By then, I had an extremely difficult time walking. At the hospital, I was in the ER for hours and hours as different doctors came in and did many different tests on me. I had to have thousands of x-rays and catscans and worst of all; a spinal tap. Final, my diagnosis came; I had Guillain-Barre syndrome.
At the hospital I went through OT & PT. Finally I got to go home, still week but only for 3 weeks when I was sent back into the hospital because I still could not walk. I had lost so much weigh because it affect my appetite and bowel movement along with urination. So I was fed through an IV and had a catheter inserted.
I had reached my highest point when the virus hit my head area. I couldn’t see or anything. But it was an absolute miracle. The virus starts at the feet and works its way up through the body. Once it hits your lungs you can’t breathe. However in my situation the virus totally skipped over my lungs!!!!!!
I got so much stronger after I had this blood transfution done to me. I really don’t remember what it was called. But it was through an IV and it was part of people’s blood going into my bloodstream.
I was bummed though when I was told I had to go to a rehabilitation center. There I gained so much strength! I was really almost myself but not quite.
I was extremely put down when a nurse practitioner approached me and told me it may take me up to a year and a half to get better and I wouldn’t be able to dance again. I love dance! I’ve been dancing since I was 3 years old. I’m in my sophmore year now:still dancing.
After one horrible month of my summer I was able to return to my home! One month-it took me only one month to recover from GBS Nevermind what that nurse said either. One month compared to up to a year and a half and that september i returned to my dance studio and made it into the top level there!
Nowadays, I cannot get many vaccines like Meningitis(sp?) and the flu shot, but i know ill be fine! I also can no longer to a cartwheel or a back hand spring- things i could do pre-GBS. But really thats okay. I gained so much from this experiance. I learned to never give up and keep fighting. Don’ let anyone bring you down or make you feel that you cant get through it. I fought my butt of through every painful moment and perservered through everytime where i wanted to give up! If your fighting GBS- dont give up think positive, it may not take you one month but you will get back to your normal lifestyle- you just gotta keep trying hard and stay strong and you will get through it!!!!!!! = ]

  • My miracle - by Marivel - (Sat, Sep 22 2007)
On July 28,2007, I woke up and got out of bed at 7:30am. As I started to walk to the bathroom my legs gave out and I fell to the floor. Shocked as I was I attempted to get up. Again I fell to the floor and there was no pain…the only thing was that I could not function from my lower extremities. I laid there on the floor until my friend came over as I called her on her cell. I asked her to help me get into the shower for I had to go to the emergency room. [more..]
