Scared with Hope

by: Christian on Mon, Jul 23 2007

Hi My Name is Christian. I am a 45 year old fireman. In June of 2005 I had a spinal fusion of L4 & L5. About 10 days later I started feeling extreme abdominal pain. I went to the hospital and was treated for the pain only and went home. During the next 4 days I went to the hospital 2 more times. During this time I had complete intestinal blockage (paralysis) as well as facial paralysis, the pain was like nothing I had ever experienced. Again I was not properly diagnosed. I finally went back to my surgeon and he took one look at me and told me I was Dying. He had me admitted and I spent the next 8 days in the hospital with Guillain Barre.

I received 2 spinal taps as well as an intestinal cleaning and massive amounts of medicine, 2 of the days were in the ICU. I lost 25 lbs while in the hospital. I had severe fatigue and right side facial paralysis for 6 months. I was scared but was told I will get better. I walked as much as I could each day but with the fatigue it was hard. Eating was a chore because I felt like I had the worst case of the Flu x20. I was cold all day and I would sweat all night.

I gradually got better after about 5 months. Today is July 13, 2007 and I still have some residual effects such as facial tightness that I can feel but not see. Fatigue comes and goes. I am back to work full time as a Fireman. This experience has humbled me in a way I never thought possible. It was extremely difficult but with faith and determination I pulled through it. I wish nobody has to experience this. After reading other stories I feel lucky that I got off easy. I hope this story helps and finds you well. If it does not, have faith and do not give up. I was scared and extremely emotional thru this process of recovery. Good luck and God Bless

April 27, 2004 should have been a great time in my life. I had been retired for a year and just beginning to enjoy the easier life. With no warning other than a bad night sleep with an ache in the middle of my back that wouldn’t go away about dawn I finally woke my husband and asked him to drive me to the emergency room at our local hospital.
