Shaky left thumb
by: Chris on Wed, Aug 29 2007

Hello, i am forty-eight I have had this problem for about three years. When I touch my left thumb to my left index finger the thumb shakes pretty good; when I touch it to my middle finger it still shakes but not as bad. If I hold a pencil with my thumb and index finger, boy, it shakes rapidly and as much as I tighten the pressure it does not change even when I loosen the pressure.

It is pretty hard to weld with this problem as I am holding the filler rod in my left hand and need to be quite still and purpoesful with the touch of the filler in the pudle. I’m extremely frustrated with this. Also, if I hold a plate as a waiter / waitress would do, over their shoulder, with my left hand, boy does it go back and forth as my thumb is shaking rapidly, O what fun that is!

I have lived with et [essential tremor] for just about two years now. ET affects every part of my body, even my speech. I feel glad at the end of every day when I can sleep and be without ET for a while. It is also a very exhausting condition as all sufferers will know. [more..]
  • Response to Wendy - by Andy - (Fri, Aug 17 2007)
Hi Wendy and others: I have had et all of my life (52 now) as do 4 of 7 siblings. We apparently are in the lucky gene club :). I now take 360mg of inderal LA daily which my doctor says is the maximum that can be prescribed. You may want to speak with the doctor about increasing your dosage which is of course dependent upon many things so may not be for you. I have a brother who can not even take 40mg doses. [more..]
  • What can we do? - by DF - (Mon, Aug 06 2007)
My sister was finally diagnosed several months ago with ET [essential tremor]. She has suffered with the “shakes” and been “nervous” nearly her entire life. I could not imagine how many times in our life, she or my mother has said “she’s been nervous all her life”. I am online searching information again tonight due to a couple of incidents that have happened to her just this week and it has infuriated me, the ignorance that people have when it comes to conditions that they know nothing about. [more..]
