Why are you shaking?

The first time I noticed my hands shaking was during 5th grade band when I had a playing test and I had to play my clarinet in front of the entire band. I wasn’t nervous, well, not until everyone in the class started whispering “Look, her hands are shaking!” I covered it up with “I’m nervous.”

This continued on through high school and then when I began to pursue a music degree in college it began to interfere with my life. I decided tonight that I am going to do something about it. Everyone still thinks it’s because I’m nervous, and until tonight I had never thought about it. I believe I have essential tremor and I really want to find help. Playing clarinet is something I love to do and I want to manage this problem. Besides, it’s really embarrassing when I’m trying to hold a plate of food at a barbeque and all my food goes all over the place because of my condition. Or, when I’m trying to take a picture with a camera and I’m shaking so bad that every picture turns out blurry. It bothers me that everyone has to say something about it.

I have always had people notice my “nervous” hands. My maternal grandfather had ET and the condition is quite common in my family. I take Propranalol which helps but does tend to make me drowsy. [more..]
