Change in seizure frequency
by: Sherwin on Sun, Sep 30 2007

I had my first seizure when I was 4 years old (I’m now 33) and it was a grand mal seizure where I was trying to swallow my tongue. For years after that leading into adulthood I had petit mal seizures that were controlled by Phenobarbitol.
I stayed on that with no problem until my body developed an immunity to it and I then went to Tegretol. After a year or so I went to Carbatrol for a change of release I believe. That seemed to lose effectiveness a little so I now take Depakote.

Also roughly during the time from going from Tegretol/Carbatrol to Depakote I went from having petit mal seizures to having grand mal (tonic clonic) or possibly even myoclonic. They really seem to be a combination. My petit mal symptoms were, if I had them in my sleep, I slept like normal and just had a headache WAY worse than a migraine after waking up that lasted all day. When very, very young, though, I did have a recurrent dream of being chased by something I couldn’t see on a deserted army base where the outline expanded and contracted with my heartbeat. I also sometimes had one of swimming in a circular, stadium-like pool with people sitting all the way around watching. If I had them awake I had deja vu where I always heard the same voices I heard when I had one as a child in our gym at school and all I felt like doing was just standing or sitting still until it passed even though I could move and talk if I needed, and could keep anyone from knowing it was happening if I wanted to. There were no side effects afterward from having one while awake.

Presently the awake ones have not changed. They are a rarity as they have always been. The change has come in what happens when I’m asleep. Instead of having them 1-2 times a year (I once went 4 years between) I now have them 1-3 times a month.

Also instead of just sleeping I may throw limbs around (my shoulder was originally dislocated during one), and I gnaw my tongue. I no longer have the recurrent dream about the army base or pool, and feel extremely fatigued and sometimes disoriented.
The change seemed to start slowly at one every 6-9 months instead of 1/year or thereabouts, and then seemed to go to 1-2/month overnight.

Has anyone ever heard of this, had it happen to them, or know of the cause(s)? And if anyone has, what was the treatment?
ANY help, info, or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I will post anything that I find out from my doctor back on here.
