Shana’s Story

I got Encephalitis when i was in Kindergarden, 5 years old. I was at the Convenience store and i dropped to the floor and had severe seizures i had several after. I was rushed to Southlake Hospital in Canada and they had no idea what i had, so my grandma told my mom to bring me to Sick kids Childrens hospital in Toronto , they figured out i had Encephalitis. I was in the hospital for over 2 weeks i have no idea how long after that it took to recover because i was too young to remember.

But ever since then ive been having ALOT of learning problems. I cant get things straight in my head, people have to repeat and help me understand the most basic of situations. I couldnt pass grade 9 math after 3 tries. Actually i only have 8 1/2 high school credits because i barely understand anything. I barely understood middle school. They just pass you no matter what. I probably only know what a 12 year old kid knows. They probably even know more. I can read for some reason really well, i had a grade 11 reading level in grade 6. So im proud of that , even though that wont really get me where i need to be.

But Math is the worst though my brain just cant grasp concepts and when i do i forget it the next day or if they change a question in any way i have no idea how to solve it. I cant drive because my head keeps drifting off into space and id kill someone. I forget im cooking things on the stove way too often. Even working is really hard because i worked as a cashier at Little ceasers when i was 15 and after 3 months i couldnt grasp prices and combo deals and stuff like so i had to quit. Plus the prices and combos changed all the time before i could even grasp what it took 3 months to learn. Its hard also because i have a 2 year old daughter and i wont be able to help her with school work and that makes me feel like a bad mom.

My whole life my mom just thought i wasnt trying and so were my teachers, my mom actually gave up on me and stopped caring, thinking i was never going to learn things, thats what she’d tell me. That didnt really help but now i know its really from the Encephalitis, we always had an idea it was but we didnt know.

The Encephalitis was too severe for my brain at 5 and i guess im left with a severe learning disablility. Im very sensitive, like over the top sensitive, ive suffered from depression since i was 15, but i think i have a heart of gold(= Im 20 now with the smarts of a 12 year old but im environmentally friendly and try to be as conscious as possible, im all about animal rights, volunteering, i contribute what i can to charities. So im still trying to do my part to help the planet even if its not being able to be a doctor or something. Even though that would be nice. I actually wanted to be a funeral director but theres no way i could ever do that. But i do plan on going back to school and getting as many credits as possible giving myself as long as i need to pass them.

Well thats my story.
