Coma

by: Shyluer on Tue, Apr 08 2008

My husband had a seizure on October 31, 2007. This lead to cardiac arrest and electronic resesitation. After many chemical tests and ct scans he was diagnosed as being a comatose state. His pupils beame dialted sometime in November and then he was unresponsive to all stimuli except sound. It has been 6months and he has no recognition of his family or his surroundings. He can open his eyes and he has basic life functions over his body but he in a presistant vegetative state.

I have become an advocate for providing the best health care, (PT, nutrition, and medicine) that I can but it is hard as I also need to work to provide for our two minor children. I am interested in communicating with other families that have experieinced this kind of sistuation and am seeking some insights on how to continue to support my husband and to continu living without his input. I have tried to maintain a semblence of normalcy but often it is hard.

I have developed a relationship with the staff at our local hospital and even participatein his daily care. I have so many questions about the qaulity of life, the medications that stimulate brain activty, and the long term prognosis for vegatative coma patients. If you can provide me with any answers or suggestions I would be most grateful. Right now I’m living in limbo.
