Chronic pain is depressing

by: Mary on Tue, Mar 04 2008

It all started about 12 years ago when my husband was in an auto accident. He fractured vertebrae in his neck. At the time, he took volumes of Vicodin and had injections in his neck by a pain management doctor. Over the years, the neck vertebrae healed, but he still complained of pain. Then he was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and went into denial. It took 6 or 7 years before he really took control of the diabetes. Meanwhile, he began taking various diabetes medications, pain medications, duragesic patches and antidepressants.

We were self employed and his insurance company moved out of our state which left us with no insurance to cover meds. Now, I am employed at a company that covers my husband, but not before we went through thousands of dollars in cash trying to manage the pain/depression/diabetes issues. Even though the family members try to be positive and uplifting in our approach to my husband and his various problems, we are worn out mentally, and we all fear that any day the pain and depression will lead him to do something drastic. I’d appreciate any suggestions.
