Onset, July 18, 2008 My husband and I were out picking wild blueberries, I ate one, walked back to the cabin and thought there must have been a bug on the blueberrie and it bit me, the inside of my mouth felt numb. I got a slight headache and my left ear hurt. I took a painreliever and it went away. That evening we went out to eat and I could not believe how loud the lady at the next table was talking, my husband said she isn’t talking loud, I thought she was yelling. No other symtoms until Sat. morning when we were packing and heading home. We stopped for breakfast and thought why is the coffee running down my mouth and why can’t I taste the food. In the car I kept running my tongue across my teeth and thought now why doesn’t my tongue go both ways and why does everything seem thick. Then I start blinking (kinda experimenting on my own with different facial moves)and find out my left eye doesn’t close. By the time we got home, 4 hrs later, it seemed worse, called the ER, they said come in you are either having a stroke or Bells Palsy Sure enough, Bell’s. CT rulled out stroke. My facial exam proved it, left eye doesn’t close, I talk out of the right side of my mouth, and my vision is strained, I have to really focus. I was put on predisone and valtrex. I saw my regular Dr. on Monday, she prescribed Doxycycline for Lymes (Lymes test came back neg), she wanted me to take the meds even tho the test was neg. I won’t take it, it made my heart race, and tongue feel thicker than it already is. I felt sick on it. My mouth gets very dry and tired if I talk to much, inside of my mouth on the effected side feels so tired on the inside, even my gums or teeth feel odd, and of course my left eye stays open and tears up the right eye. Vision is blurred, due to trying to focus. I have a question, how do you know if its a mild case or severe case? From anyone of you that has recovered or can start to see improvement, was it gradual improvment, or can you wake up one morning and say “its gone?” No it wasn’t the blueberrie, however, I will boycott blueberries, you know how you relate illness to certain things.
