My Bouts with Bell’s
by: Linda
on Wed, Jul 16 2008
In January, 2000 while visiting our daughter and family in Germany, I woke up with the left side of my face paralyzed. Frightened of what was happening we went to a German Emergency Room. I was treated immediately, ct scanned then told by a neurologist to see a plastic surgeon the next day. I did and he prescribed 250 mg of steroid by iv to start, I received iv steroid for 5 days, then gradually was weaned off them. I have only one reminder - a paralyzed nerve in the floor of my mouth which I discovered while having dental xrays.
In mid-June 2008, I had a headache and thought sinus infection. The pa at my doc’s gave me amoxycyllin and I thought everything was okay until the muscle on my right jaw locked up the next night. Realizing the symptoms of Bell’s I saw the doc the next day. He felt due to my age (61) I should have a ct scan to rule out any brain involvement. Before I left his office, he did accupuncture on me and I could at least close my eye. He prescribed 80mg of Prednisone and Valtrex while waiting for blood work. I believe my first bout was from the old chicken pox virus. When my blood work came back, I had tested positive for Lyme Disease Bell’s is a result of second stage undetected Lyme which I found out through internet research. My doc continued to treat me with pred, doxycycline and accupuncture. Not only was my face paralyzed but the Lyme causes muscle and joint pain as well. The accupuncture has helped not only the paralysis but the pain. I think that more people in the Northeast should be made aware of the ramifications of undetected Lyme. After 3 weeks of treatments, my Bell’s is almost gone. I still can’t blink automatically which is annoying but I can close my eye and my face can’t completely smile but it is considerably better. I feel like my “mission” is to make more people aware of Lyme Disease and also Bell’s. Thanks

So, after reading a couple of stories, I should probably back-up a few days on my situation. Some of this info may/may not be related to the Bell’s Palsy that I now have, but it’s worth noting because it’s been a crazy week and there seems to be a lot of unknowns about BP!
