Why hello Bell’s Palsy…I wasnt expecting you!

by: Stephanie on Tue, May 27 2008

Ok…so one morning i wake up, brush my teeth, get ready for school, and go into the kitchen to eat breakfast. As soon as a take a bite of my sandwich i realize thats somethings wrong. The left side of my tongue felt weird and it made the sandwich taste awful! I told my mom and she said it was probably becouse i ate something really hot and i just lost taste for awhile. So i was like “Well if i ate something hot i would’ve noticed, right?”. So i was like well what ever, maybe it was that. A day passed and I still had that funny feeling on my tongue. That morning i had a minor headache so i discarded it and still went to school. As the day progressed the headache got to a point where i couldn’t stand it any longer. Later in the day i started getting a sharp pain on the back of my left ear. I also started to notice that the left side of my lip felt sort of numb. Yet again i discarded it. That night when I was brushing my teeth i was ready to rinse my mouth when out of no where the water that was in my mouth spilled onto my shirt. I was like What?? I tryed it again and for some odd reason i coulnt hold the water in my mouth! I didnt tell anyone because they were all asleep already. So the next morning my mom went in to my room to wake me up for school and I showed her how i couldnt keep the water in my mouth. She told me she would take me to the doctor. So I decided to take a shower before we left. I was washing my face when I realized that I couldnt keep my left eye lid closed! Thats when i began to freak out. We went to the doctor and after an eternity of waiting he told me that I might have Bell’s Palsy. He told my parents to take me to the emergency room right away. So we left as soon as he told us. Lucky for us there wasnt that many people there. They ran some tests and they were sure it was Bell’s Palsy. They gave me some steriods to take for 5 days and lubricant for my left eye because I couldnt close it all the way so therefore it would dry out. Its been about 4 days and it has gotten worse. I cant smile, eat, drink,or even talk correctly. And the pills they gave me taste sooo bad! Plus i cant even swallow the freaking pill. I have to say that I have somewhat shut my self out of my normal routine. I dont even want to think about going back to school. Im afraid of what my peers will think of me. But after reading other peoples stories I have realized that I have to be strong and fight through this. I was given this for a reason so why not make the best of it? Im only 15 so it’ll be tough but hopefully with the help of my family and friends I will pull through.I also want to say to all the other peeps out there with Bell’s Palsy that you are not alone. We are here for you=)
