rediagnosed with Bells Palsy
by: Amy on Thu, Apr 24 2008
Facebook Twitter

In May of 2004 I was excited because I was going to have a baby girl. On May 16th, I had a c-section and everything seemed normal. The next morning when the doctor came in to check on me he noticed that the right side of my face was droopy and my eye was real watery. At first, they thought I had a stroke so I had to have a series of tests run which included a MRI with contrast. The MRI was fine so the neurologist ruled it as Bells Palsy

It felt nice to know that I didn’t suffer a stroke and hoped that I would recover quickly. I was prescribed Prednisone and eye drops. I also had to wear an eye patch to keep my right eye closed. I could not eat or drink without it dribbling out of my mouth. I had difficulty speaking and it was very frustrating because I felt happy and wanted to smile because of my newborn but I was unable to smile at all.

A couple of weeks went by and I was able to eat and drink properly, but I was still feeling tingly and numb at times. I used facial exercises and that seemed to help. So about 3 weeks ago (end of Mar 2008) when I was having the same symptoms, but with numbness to the whole right side of my body. I was concerned and went to the ER, since I was 24 wks or so pregnant I was immediately admitted to labor and delivery. The doctor just monitored the baby, but did not do any tests. I was discharged and told to limit stress and to walk to help with the pain in my right leg.

Today I went to the Dr. for my prenatal visit and she took one look at me and was very concerned. When I told her my medical history and how long I was experiencing this numbness, she ordered me to go back to the ER and have an MRI. So I went to the ER and they questioned her orders, but they ran the blood tests, ekg and MRI without contrast. (FYI I was told that there were not enough studies done on pregnant woman and MRIs so they had me sign a consent form stating I was aware of the risks. They couldn’t administer the contrast because they do know that that goes through the placenta. That was fine by me as I had contrast the first time and it was not pleasant. Also, please note I was not able to breastfeed because I had contrast after my first child was born.

So as I hoped the MRI came back negative and they ruled Bells Palsy again. So I am proof that you can get it again. I am relieved to know that I can recover from this and this time I can smile. Hopefully the steriods and the eye drops that were prescribed to me will work I will be fine. This condition is annoying, but I am learning to deal with it. I am glad that I was able to find this website and be able to share my story.
