Living with Bells Palsy
by: Terri
on Mon, Sep 03 2007
My name is Terri and I am 25 yrs old. I have been living with Bells Palsy for 16 yrs now. I was eleven when I was diagnosed. My face was a gradual change. I was living nomal when my parents noticed a change in my facde expressions and soon took me to a doctor and they diagnosed me with it. They tried medicine and did MRI and CAT scan. Everyhing was normal and the meds did not work. I seen many doctors. I have been to chiropractors and surgeons. My only option at age 15 would have been surgery. I told my parents I did not want to go through with that. I lived a rough life through school because many kids were so cruel. I played fast pitched softball for school and had three scholarships to play ball but I chose not to. So I have been just living a regular life. I am married and have three children. I am working as an medical office assistant and soon may be able to go back o school for LPN. I started seeing an acpuncture. It seems after 16 long yrs that this may be my answer to my prayers. My eye seems almost normal and hopefully my smile will be back.

They ran the stroke tests and they came out all ok so the dr said to me, “You have Bells [Bell’s Palsy].”

I woke on a Thursday with what I described as a “plastic tongue and roof of mouth”. On Friday, I woke and asked my partner if my lips were “swollen”. I could not feel them. When I brushed my teeth, I could not hold the water in my mouth, and later that day, it was noticed that I was not blinking my left eye.
