Is My Son Autistic? A Beginning Fear

by: David on Mon, Mar 10 2008

My son Alex may be autistic. We still do not know. We are going to have an assessment as soon as we can.

Alex is constantly reading. He likes looking at books and memorize the texts. He is not quite three. He has great motor skills, he started running at nine months, but tends to like to do his own thing.

He does not socialize with the other children in his day care much. He constantly recites the texts in Slovak at his daycare without stopping.

However, he has varied interests such as listening to music and playing piano with his mum, drawing, play dough, picking flowers (in summer).

He also has to deal with two languages, Slovak and English. He does come to us parents when we call him but often he ignores us when he is listening to music or wants to look at his books.

His daycare teacher is concerned because he does not interact with the other kids and often ignores her.

He also lines up letters of his alphabet or blocks. I am told that this might be a sign as well. On the other hand, he can count up to fifty if he sees the numbers and knows his alphabet phonetically and in the old fashioned English way.

We took him to one GP and he said he was normal but there were no tests. My own mother keeps reading things on autism and talks to us about it. She worries because he is so intelligent but does not interact so much with others that he must be “a high spectrum” child.

Still, he is affectionate to us and sometimes others.

We are so worried. I guess you could classify what I am writing as anxiety I wish I could speak to someone about this. I am at my wits end with worry.

Help us with some advice please. We are so worried.
