We got the official diagnosis a few days ago, right before his birthday. He was officially diagnosed with ADD in 3rd grade and by the end of public high school in his junior and senior years I noticed he wasn’t as successful as he had been before. After high school he got frustrated, blew off college for a semester and decided to leave home. The next two years he held one job after another with long spans between. He’d get fired and not even go pick up his last paycheck. Finally he asked to come home. As a mom my heart was breaking because he and I just couldn’t figure out what was wrong! Frustrating! Depressing! I saw an article from an old Dear Abby column mentioning Aspergers and we decided togethe to investigate and find some kind of answer. ADD just didn’t cover what was going on. He had the classic symptoms… high IQ, early speech lessons, sensitivity to textures, etc. Hindsite is wonderful. We in the process of learning what resources are available in my state from DARS (Dept. of Adult Rehabilitative Services. I will be checking this site regularly for info and encouragement. Thanks to those of you who share your stories. Comments
