Possible Dementia

by: Marilyn on Tue, Oct 09 2007

My mother is 93. Yes, that is pretty old, but up until now (and even now) she has not exhibited any signs or symptoms of dementia. Most people that meet her think she is much younger as she is very aware of her surroundings and news and weather and current events.

The problem started eight months ago when she was being treated at home for pneumonia and several days later was discovered to have CHF. During the time before she went to the hospital she started exhibiting some pretty bizarre behavior. Babbling all day and all night, not sleeping except for cat naps, not eating, or taking in enough fluid and inventing an imaginary friend.

I took her to the hospital four days after having been to the dr’s office where the dr. thought she may have pneumonia The following day she broke her foot. So in addition to the CHF which she actually had she was in pain from the break.

Eight months later she is taking psychotropic drugs for dementia due to imaginary people she is communicating with. None of the usual reports I have read about dementia involves imaginary people or voices in the head.

I still don’t believe it is dementia, but have no idea where to find out what it could be. We are currently seeing a psychiatrist for this problem and he seems to be at a loss as to what it could be.

So if anyone has ever heard of something like this, please write it in this column and I will keep a watch out.

I am suffering from burning pain in my feet, legs, arms and face. Even my tongue and gums are affected. The pain is getting worse as time goes by and I am feeling at a pretty low ebb. I cannot walk far as my feet are far too painful and I can’t bear wearing shoes when my feet are burning and it is difficult to relax once at home as the pain is so intense. [more..]

  • Looking 4 answers - by Missing Her - (Wed, Oct 10 2007)
About 6 months ago a co-worker/friend was hospitalized with pnemonia [pneumonia] and the doctors found an irregular heart beat. She followed up with her doctor who then sent her to several other ’specialists’. Being a very private woman, she never disclosed exactly what the specialists were looking/testing her for. She lost lots of weight over the last 6 months and she simply looked tired. [more..]
