Living with ALS 30 years Plus

by: Irene on Thu, Nov 15 2007

Hi, I am a victim of ALS. I was diagnosed in April of 1976 at the age of 34.It took Neurologist 9 months of many neurological test to diagnose ALS The onset began with me falling, dropping things and muscle spasms and twitching.

I had to be trached in1981 because my lungs filled with fluid and I was drowning in my own fluid. Then I went into respiratory failure in’86 and was placed on ventilator.

The disease progressed fairly rapid at first. I was paralized from the neck down within four years. I lost my voice completely with the tracheostomy. I communicate by lip reading and my computer. I can still swallow with some difficulty.

I still enjoy life as much as possible . I love music, reading, tv, going to church when possible and sharing e-mail with others that have ALS
My computer has made such a difference in my daily living. I have Ez-keys with words+. It has the eye blink system.
I would like very much if someone wants to e-mail.
